It’s no secret that starting and maintaining a business takes a lot of courage, foresight and resilience. Being an entrepreneur isn’t for the faint of heart. Yet, the opportunity still calls to many of us, and we continue to answer that call. Why?
For some, it’s the chance to create something of our own, for others, it’s the promise of time, location and financial freedom. Whatever the case, it’s important for each of us to know our “Why.” The Why will keep us inspired and motivated when things are less than ideal, and when quitting seems to be the best idea.
As I’ve stated before, your business and your brand are about more than selling products and services to the public. It’s a reflection of who you are, what you believe and how you want to show up in the world. After all, people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it. Your business is your hopes and dreams manifested, your imprint, your legacy. It’s inextricably tied to the real you, and as you pour your soul into building this legacy, you know this to be true: your business can’t grow if you don’t. The path of the entrepreneur is one of adventure, discovery and mastery. But it’s also one of self-awareness and self-actualization. And so, because you are the foundation of your business, you must put self care first. It’s non-negotiable.
How are you treating yourself? With patience, kindness and compassion, or a lack thereof? I guarantee, however you feel about you, will manifest itself and show up in your business. Not fully embracing your body shape? That photo shoot for your rebranding may not radiate the confidence you were hoping. Not sure you can speak your truth (about your journey, products, etc.) because there may be some naysayers out there? Then your video may not have the high vibe, inspirational tone you intended. Had one misstep with handling a customer service matter that you can’t forgive yourself for? Then other customers may take advantage of you in the future.
When we don’t treat ourselves well, I believe this is for one reason: we’ve forgotten how amazing we truly are, with or without the entrepreneur label. Yes, we’re all badasses! We’re walking miracles with a bad case of amnesia. I found a very effective, and timely, reminder in Jen Sincero’s book, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Live an Awesome Life.” It’s an incredible book full of humor, truth and light to show the way back to the authentic You.
